Graduated Driver Licensing in Edison High School – What Every Beginning Driver and Parent Should Know
Coming to grips with GDL in Edison High School is where each parent should begin if the objective is a teen who drives safely and legally. New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program phases new drivers through supervised practice time before awarding full driving privileges, and the rules apply equally whether you’re heading down Oak Tree Road or getting on Route 1. The GDL requirements shake out as follows, in everyday terms.
GDL Facts for New Jersey:
- A three-step path. The path for new NJ drivers begins with a learner’s permit, continues through a probationary (restricted) license, and finishes with a basic (unrestricted) license.
- Permits are issued in two varieties. At 16, a state-approved driving school can issue a Special Learner’s Permit; at 17, the MVC hands out an Examination Permit itself.
- Supervision is not optional. Riding in the front passenger seat next to any permit holder must be a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has three years of experience or better.
- No fewer than 6 hours with a professional instructor. If you have a Special Learner’s Permit, a licensed NJ driving school is required to take you through six hours behind the wheel.
- A half-year waiting period. Permit holders must drive for at least six months, violation-free, before taking the road test.
- Red plate decals are required. Reflective red decals belong on both the front and rear plates of every driver under 21 who holds a permit or probationary license.
- Late-night driving is not allowed. No driving between 11:01 p. m. and 5:00 a. m., with narrow exceptions for work or religious reasons.
- Limits on passengers. Unless a parent or guardian is in the vehicle, or the driver is transporting their own dependents, the limit is one additional passenger.
- No phones or devices. All cell phone and hands-free device use is off limits for GDL drivers – no exceptions.
- Seat belts for everyone. The driver is responsible for ensuring all occupants are buckled.
- Zero tolerance for alcohol. A BAC of 0.01% or higher brings penalties for any driver under 21.
- One year probationary. Before a driver applies for a basic license, a year of unsupervised driving without violations has to follow the road test.
- 50 hours behind the wheel, documented and certified. Permit holders under 21 must put in a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, before moving on to a probationary license. The road test isn’t available until those hours are certified on the official MVC form.
- When GDL restrictions are removed. Only after probation is behind you and a basic license is issued – at 18 or older – do the GDL restrictions come off. Up to that point, any driver under 21 must still observe the curfew, passenger limits, decal rule, and device ban.
- Consequences are a lot more than a warning. Break a GDL rule and you may run into a fine, a delay in when you are eligible for a license, and additional time on probation.
