GDL in Westfield High School – What Every New Driver and Parent Must Know

Before your teen can legally and safely get behind the wheel, GDL in Westfield High School is the one thing to learn about first. New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program eases new drivers through monitored practice before awarding full driving privileges, and the rules apply equally whether you’re heading down Oak Tree Road or making your way to Route 1. What follows is a plain-English rundown of what the GDL program demands and throughout New Jersey.

New Jersey GDL Facts:
  • Three stages. Every new NJ driver moves through a learner’s permit, a probationary (restricted) license, and finally a basic (unrestricted) license.
  • Two ways to get a permit. Teens can pick up a Special Learner’s Permit at 16 through a licensed driving school, or an Examination Permit at 17 directly through the MVC.
  • Supervision is not optional. Riding in the front passenger seat beside any permit holder must be a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has three years of experience or better.
  • Six hours of professional training, minimum. If you’re holding a Special Learner’s Permit, a licensed NJ driving school has to put you through six hours behind the wheel.
  • A six-month waiting period. The road test comes only after six months of violation-free practice on the permit.
  • Kyleigh’s Law and the red decals. If a driver is under 21 and holds either a permit or a probationary license, both license plates must have reflective red decals on them.
  • There’s a nighttime curfew. Apart from a few limited exceptions tied to a job or religious observance, driving is prohibited from 11:01 p. m. until 5:00 a. m.
  • Passenger limits. Unless a parent or guardian is on board, or the driver is carrying their own dependents, the limit is a single additional passenger.
  • No phones or devices. GDL drivers may not use a cell phone or hands-free device under any circumstances, and there is no exception to that.
  • Seat belts for everyone. The driver is responsible for making sure all occupants are buckled.
  • There is no room for alcohol. Penalties apply for every driver under 21 who records a BAC of 0.01% or above.
  • One year probationary. Before a driver applies for a basic license, a year of unsupervised driving without violations has to follow the road test.
  • The 50-hour practice log. Before a probationary license can be issued, every permit holder under 21 has to log 50 hours of supervised driving, and 10 of those hours must be after dark. Sign-off on an MVC form is necessary before a driver can take the road test.
  • The basic license removes the restrictions. Finishing probation and being issued a basic license is what clears away the GDL restrictions, and 18 is the youngest age that can happen. Until then, drivers under 21 still fall under the curfew, passenger limits, decal requirement, and device ban.
  • Penalties are real. GDL violations can carry fines, delayed license eligibility, and extended probationary periods.
