Graduated Driver Licensing in Metuchen High School – What Each Beginning Driver and Parent Must Know

Before your teen can safely and legally start driving, Graduated Driver Licensing in Metuchen High School is the thing to figure out first. Monitored practice comes before full privileges under New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, something that applies on Oak Tree Road and Route 1 just the same. What comes next is a jargon-free walkthrough of the GDL requirements that are in force and across the state.

NJ GDL Facts:
  • Three stages. The path for new NJ drivers opens with a learner’s permit, moves on to a probationary (restricted) license, and ends with a basic (unrestricted) license.
  • A couple of ways to get a permit. One option is that a teen signs up with a state-approved driving school for a Special Learner’s Permit at 16, or they hold off until 17 and get an Examination Permit directly from the MVC.
  • Practice has to be supervised. Permit holders must ride with a licensed driver age 21+ who has a minimum of three years of driving experience, sitting in the front passenger seat.
  • At least 6 hours with a certified instructor. If you have a Special Learner’s Permit, a licensed NJ driving school must walk you through six hours behind the wheel.
  • Six-month permit hold. The road test arrives only after six months of violation-free practice on the permit.
  • Red decals (Kyleigh’s Law). Drivers under 21 with a permit or probationary license must post reflective red decals on the front and rear license plates.
  • Late-night driving is prohibited. No driving between 11:01 p. m. and 5:00 a. m., with narrow exceptions for work or religious reasons.
  • Passenger limits. One extra passenger is the maximum, and it is lifted only when a parent or guardian is in the car or the driver’s own dependents are in the car.
  • No phones or devices. GDL drivers are not allowed to use a cell phone or hands-free device whatsoever, and there’s no exception to that.
  • Belts on, all passengers. If someone in the vehicle isn’t wearing a seat belt, that’s on the driver.
  • Alcohol: zero tolerance. A BAC of 0.01% or higher triggers penalties for every driver under 21.
  • One year probationary. Before a driver applies for a basic license, a year of unsupervised driving without violations must follow the road test.
  • Fifty hours of supervised driving. Fifty supervised hours – ten of them at night – stand between an under-21 permit holder and a probationary license. Documentation on an MVC form is necessary before a driver can take the road test.
  • Full privileges come with the basic license. Getting through probation and being issued a basic license is what lifts the GDL restrictions, and 18 is the youngest age that can happen. Until then, drivers under 21 remain subject to the curfew, passenger limits, decal requirement, and device ban.
  • Consequences are a lot more than a warning. Break a GDL rule and you may run into a fine, a delay in when you are eligible for a license, and extra time on probation.
