GDL in North Plainfield High School: The Basics for Parents and First-Time Drivers

Before your teen can safely and legally get behind the wheel, GDL in North Plainfield High School is the thing to understand first. Full driving privileges aren’t given out right away in New Jersey – the Graduated Driver License (GDL) system requires a period of supervised practice first, and neither Oak Tree Road nor Route 1 alters how those requirements work. The GDL requirements shake out as follows, in everyday terms.

New Jersey GDL Facts:
  • A three-stage path. Each new NJ driver passes through a learner’s permit, a probationary (restricted) license, and ultimately a basic (unrestricted) license.
  • Two permit paths. One option is that a teen signs up with a licensed driving school for a Special Learner’s Permit at 16, or they hold off until 17 and pick up an Examination Permit straight from the MVC.
  • Supervision isn’t optional. A licensed driver of 21 or older with three plus years of experience must ride in the front passenger seat any time a permit holder is behind the wheel.
  • Six hours of professional training, minimum. Six hours of behind-the-wheel training at a licensed NJ driving school is mandatory for any teen holding a Special Learner’s Permit.
  • Six-month permit hold. The road test comes only after six months of violation-free practice on the permit.
  • Red plate decals are required. Drivers under 21 with a permit or probationary license must show reflective red decals on the front and rear license plates.
  • Curfew. Aside from a few limited exceptions tied to a job or religious observance, driving is not permitted from 11:01 p. m. until 5:00 a. m.
  • Who can ride along is limited. Unless a parent or guardian is riding along, or the driver is carrying their own dependents, the limit is a single additional passenger.
  • No phones or devices. GDL drivers are not allowed to use a cell phone or hands-free device whatsoever, and there’s no exception to that.
  • Everyone buckles up. The driver is responsible for ensuring all occupants are buckled.
  • There’s no room for alcohol. For drivers under 21, hitting 0.01% BAC is sufficient to invite penalties.
  • A full probationary year. Before anyone applies for a basic license, a year of unsupervised driving without violations must follow the road test.
  • Fifty hours behind the wheel, documented and certified. Fifty supervised hours – ten of them at night – separate an under-21 permit holder from a probationary license. The road test won’t happen until those hours are documented and certified on the official MVC form.
  • The basic license ends the restrictions. Only after probation has been completed and a basic license is issued – at 18 or older – do the GDL restrictions come off. Until then, drivers under 21 are still bound by the curfew, passenger limits, decal requirement, and device ban.
  • Penalties are real. Fines, a longer wait for license eligibility, and an extended probationary period are all potential results of a GDL violation.
