Driving School In Plainfield NJ

When you’d like you or your child to feel comfortable behind the wheel, making an investment in professional choice driving lessons when your teenager gets their GDL in Plainfield NJ or other local areas from an experienced instructor is a wise idea. The first period of driving is something that intimidates a large number of teenagers. A lot of them will put it off perhaps for years, or well into their adult life. Some people are too intimidated and don’t ever start driving at all. This is unfortunately common in the local North NJ area. The congestion in the area and how impatient many other drivers can be are several reasons why. Inexperienced new drivers are capable of ending up panicking over things including changing lanes on the highway. Our certified professional driving instructors at Edison Driving School know this, and our goal is making sure your worries are alleviated. By making sure our students have the skills they’ll require, they will become drivers that are more comfortable and safe. It’s just not enough these days to have only the state’s minimum requirements of driving experience prior to taking the road test. If students have specific skills they need to work on, we can be of assistance so when the time comes to get their license they’re not going to feel lacking in confidence or skill. This is one of the reasons Edison Driving School is becoming such a respected option for new drivers and parents of new drivers looking for a top choice help with your permit test in Plainfield NJ and the rest of the local area.

GDL in Plainfield NJ: The Essentials for Parents and New Drivers

Getting a handle on GDL in Plainfield NJ is step one toward getting your teen safely and legally on the road. New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program moves new drivers through supervised practice before awarding full driving privileges, and the requirements work the same whether you’re driving down Oak Tree Road or getting on Route 1. The GDL requirements work out as follows, in plain English.

GDL Facts for New Jersey:
  • Three separate stages. The progression for new NJ drivers starts at a learner’s permit, continues through a probationary (restricted) license, and closes with a basic (unrestricted) license.
  • Permits come in two types. Teens can pick up a Special Learner’s Permit at 16 through a licensed driving school, or an Examination Permit at 17 straight through the MVC.
  • Supervised practice required. A licensed driver of 21 or older with three plus years of experience must ride in the front passenger seat each time a permit holder is behind the wheel.
  • At least 6 hours with an instructor. If you have a Special Learner’s Permit, a licensed NJ driving school has to put you through six hours behind the wheel.
  • A half-year waiting period. The road test happens only after six months of violation-free practice on the permit.
  • Red plate decals are mandatory. Reflective red decals need to go on both the front and rear plates of every driver under 21 who carries a permit or probationary license.
  • Late-night driving is not allowed. No driving between 11:01 p. m. and 5:00 a. m., with a few exceptions for job or religious reasons.
  • Who can come along is limited. One extra passenger is the limit, and it’s lifted only when a parent or guardian is along for the ride or the driver’s own dependents are in the car.
  • Devices stay put away. All cell phone and hands-free device use is banned for GDL drivers – no exceptions.
  • Seat belts for everyone. Ensuring each occupant is buckled is on the driver.
  • Alcohol: zero tolerance. A BAC of 0.01% or higher brings penalties for every driver under 21.
  • A full probationary year. After passing the road test, drivers must put in a full year of unsupervised, violation-free driving before applying for a basic license.
  • 50 hours of supervised driving. Fifty supervised hours – 10 of them at night – stand between an under-21 permit holder from a probationary license. The road test isn’t available until those hours are documented and certified on the MVC’s form.
  • The basic license clears the restrictions. Only after probation is over and a basic license has been granted – at 18 or older – do the GDL restrictions no longer apply. Curfew, passenger limits, decals, and the device ban still apply for every driver under 21 until that happens.
  • Penalties are real. Fines, a longer wait for license eligibility, and an extended probationary period are all possible results of a GDL violation.
