  • A full probationary year. After passing the road test, drivers must put in a full year of unsupervised, violation-free driving before applying for a basic license.
  • 50 hours behind the wheel, logged and certified. Permit holders under 21 must complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of which must be 10 hours at night, before stepping up to a probationary license. These hours must be recorded and certified on the required MVC form before the road test.
  • When GDL restrictions are removed. Finishing probation and picking up a basic license is what clears away the GDL restrictions, and 18 is the minimum age that can happen. Until then, drivers under 21 still fall under the curfew, passenger limits, decal requirement, and device ban.
  • Penalties are real. GDL violations can carry fines, delayed license eligibility, and extended probationary periods.
