New Jersey’s GDL Program

New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) is a program teen and first-time drivers must complete to get their unrestricted basic driver license. The Graduated Driver License law became effective January 1, 2001.

Why Do They Have It?

The program is designed to reduce the number of driving fatalities among teen and first-time drivers and their passengers. By having more experience, new drivers will be more capable of handling all types of driving situations.

Depending on your age, different course suite people from the age of 16 and up

What Else Should I Know?

  • Everyone in the vehicle must wear safety belts- it is the law!
  • Never use alcohol or drugs when driving.
  • There’s a 100 fine for violation of any of the conditions of the permits or provisional license.
  • Hours of operation waivers are available in certain emergency situations, for work and religious activities.

COVID-19 Update: Edison Driving School is still accepting applications.

Call us, or email us at info@edisondrivingschoolnj.com, and we will send out registration paperwork so that students can begin lessons as soon as the state allows... While we respect the “stay at home directive”, we also understand the importance of outstanding driver education to both our students and parents. Edison Driving School is also certified to give the state written exam to 16-year-old students - many of whom will not be able to take the state exam now that the high schools can not offer in-class driver education. Contact us today to begin as soon as the directive is lifted.
