GDL in Arthur L Johnson High School – What Every Beginning Driver and Parent Should Know

Understanding Graduated Driver Licensing in Arthur L Johnson High School is the starting point toward getting your teen safely and legally on the road. Practice under supervision has to come before full driving privileges under New Jersey’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, something that applies on Oak Tree Road and Route 1 equally. The GDL rules work out as follows, in plain language.

Key NJ GDL Rules:
  • Three stages. Each new NJ driver works through a learner’s permit, a probationary (restricted) license, and then finally a basic (unrestricted) license.
  • Two permit paths. At 16, an approved driving school can hand out a Special Learner’s Permit; at 17, the MVC issues an Examination Permit on its own.
  • Practice has to be supervised. Permit holders must ride with a licensed driver age 21+ who has at least three years of driving experience, seated in the front passenger seat.
  • Six hours of professional training, minimum. If you have a Special Learner’s Permit, a licensed NJ driving school must put you through six hours behind the wheel.
  • The permit runs six months minimum. Six months of driving practice without a single violation separates a permit holder from the road test.
  • Red decals (Kyleigh’s Law). Reflective red decals are required on both the front and rear plates of any driver under 21 who carries a permit or probationary license.
  • Curfew. No driving between 11:01 p. m. and 5:00 a. m., with limited exceptions for work or religious reasons.
  • Passenger limits. Only one additional passenger permitted, unless accompanied by a parent/guardian or transporting dependents.
  • Devices stay off. All cell phone and hands-free device use is off limits for GDL drivers – no exceptions.
  • Belts on, all passengers. The driver is responsible for seeing to it that all occupants are buckled.
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol. For drivers under 21, hitting 0.01% BAC is sufficient to trigger penalties.
  • Probation runs twelve months. After passing the road test, drivers must finish a full year of unsupervised, violation-free driving before applying for a basic license.
  • 50 hours behind the wheel, documented and certified. Before a probationary license can be issued, every permit holder under 21 needs to log 50 hours of supervised driving, and 10 of those hours must be after dark. These hours must be documented and signed off on the required MVC form before the road test.
  • The basic license removes the restrictions. Getting through probation and picking up a basic license is what removes the GDL restrictions, and 18 is the youngest age that can happen. Until then, drivers under 21 are still bound by the curfew, passenger limits, decal requirement, and device ban.
  • The penalties have teeth. GDL violations can carry fines, delayed license eligibility, and extended probationary periods.
